As investigators from the CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) work to “piece together the final moments” of the victims, the focus remains on the “shattering reality” of a future dedicated to public service that was “extinguished in an instant.”
The Collision: 10:00 P.M. on the Foothill Freeway
The nightmare unfolded shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Friday. According to the official report from the California Highway Patrol, Adam Saetern and a 35-year-old woman were inside a Honda Accord that was parked on the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway, near the Sunland Boulevard exit.
For reasons that remain “under active and high-priority investigation,” a Freightliner semitruck traveling eastbound veered toward the shoulder. The heavy tractor-trailer struck the stationary Honda with “catastrophic force.” The impact was so severe that both Adam and his female companion sustained fatal injuries. Despite the “rapid and heroic response” of Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, both were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semitruck, Hardev Singh, remained at the site of the crash and, according to officials, is cooperating fully with investigators.
The Investigation: Seeking Clarity in the Aftermath
As of Saturday afternoon, the CHP has confirmed that the investigation into the “contributing factors” of the crash is currently active and ongoing. Several critical elements are being weighed by detectives:
-
The Shoulder Incursion: Investigators are analyzing the truck’s GPS data and skid marks to determine why the Freightliner left the main travel lanes.
-
Toxicology and Impairment: While Singh is cooperating, officials have not yet confirmed or ruled out whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision. Standard toxicology tests are being processed.
-
Vehicle Inspection: Both the Freightliner and the mangled remains of the Honda Accord will undergo “meticulous mechanical inspections” to rule out equipment failure.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy for the families involved,” a CHP spokesperson stated. “To have a vehicle parked on the shoulder struck by a commercial truck is a ‘sobering reminder’ of the dangers present on our freeways at night.”
The Victim: Adam Saetern, A “Hero in the Making”
At 40 years old, Adam Saetern was entering the “most vibrant and determined chapter of his life.” To his family and friends, he was more than a resident; he was an “aspiring protector” who was actively working toward his dream of becoming a firefighter.
Adam had begun school last summer and was “excitedly immersed” in his fire and EMT courses. Those close to him say he was “working tirelessly” to build a future dedicated to helping others in their moments of greatest need. At the time of the crash, Adam had also been “filled with excitement” over a planned trip to Arizona with his girlfriend to visit friends.
“Adam didn’t just want a job; he wanted a ‘vocation of service,’” a family friend shared in a somber tribute. “To lose a man who was studying to save lives… it’s a ‘cruel irony’ that is breaking our hearts. He was a son, a partner, and a light that was taken far too soon.”
A Community in Mourning: Solidarity in Sunland
The 210 Freeway corridor is a “vital artery” for Sunland residents, making the Friday night crash even more of a “searing trauma” for the local community. A small, growing memorial of flowers has begun to take shape near the Sunland Boulevard off-ramp—a “silent vigil” for two lives that were “shattered in a single second.”
“Sunland is a community that rallies around its own,” a local resident noted while paying respects. “But today, we are all mourning together. Adam’s dreams were our dreams, and we are going to honor his memory by supporting those he left behind.”
How to Help: Supporting the Saetern Family
As the family navigates the “unfathomable grief” of a double loss, a fundraiser has been established to assist with the “heartbreaking burden” of funeral and memorial expenses.

“Your generosity can provide a ‘pillar of strength’ during this impossible time,” the fundraiser organizer stated. “Every contribution is a direct message of love to Adam’s family as they grapple with a future that was ‘cut tragically short.’”
In Loving Memory of Adam Saetern
As the family of Adam Saetern begins the “heartbreaking journey of final farewells,” the city of Sunland stands in “collective mourning.” Though his life was “interrupted by tragedy,” the impact of his ambition and his “spirit of service” remains a “permanent light.”
The yellow tape may be gone, and the “freeway may be open again,” but the “stain of loss” remains on the 210. The community is being urged to “hold their loved ones a little closer” and to remember the “protector” Adam Saetern was working so hard to become.
Rest in peace, Adam. You were a son of Sunland, and you will never be forgotten.
