CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA โ€” A routine Thursday afternoon at a Montgomery County fitness center turned into a “scene of absolute terror” when a disgruntled former member allegedly carried out a violent, calculated attack. Authorities have officially identified the suspect as 28-year-old Davier Edward Justin Massey of Philadelphia. Massey is now facing a litany of high-priority charges, including Criminal Attempt – Murder, after he allegedly stabbed a Planet Fitness employee multiple times following a dispute over an unpaid membership bill.

The incident, which occurred on April 2, 2026, at the gym located in the Cedarbrook Plaza Shopping Center in Wyncote, has left the local community “reeling from the audacity of the violence” and sparked an urgent conversation about workplace security in public facilities.

The Incident: A Fatal Escalation at 12:33 P.M.

The nightmare was not a spontaneous outburst but the “grim conclusion” of a series of confrontations. According to investigators with the Cheltenham Township Police Department, Davier Massey had been officially banned from the Planet Fitness location on Wednesday, April 1, after a dispute regarding an unpaid bill.

Despite the ban, Massey returned to the gym twice on Thursday.

  • The First Visit: Massey arrived earlier in the day, caused a minor disturbance, and eventually left the premises.

  • The Final Encounter: At approximately 12:33 p.m., Massey returned for a second time, reportedly “determined to escalate the conflict.”

Witnesses inside the gym described a “heated verbal argument” between Massey and a male gym employee that quickly turned physical. During the struggle, Massey allegedly produced a weapon and stabbed the worker multiple times in the torso and upper body. As the victim collapsed with life-threatening injuries, Massey fled the building on foot.

The Arrest: Quick Apprehension in the Shopping Center

The response from law enforcement was “swift and decisive.” Within minutes of the 911 calls, Cheltenham officers flooded the Cedarbrook Plaza. Utilizing witness descriptions and real-time surveillance, police located Massey a short distance away from the gym within the same shopping center.

He was taken into custody without further incident. Meanwhile, emergency responders provided “critical trauma care” to the employee before rushing him to a local trauma center. While the victimโ€™s injuries were initially described as life-threatening, hospital officials have since confirmed he is now in recovery, a development being called a “miracle of modern medicine” by those who saw the aftermath of the attack.

The Legal Fallout: Attempted Murder and Denied Bail

Davier Massey was formally processed and appeared before Judge Patrick O. Krouse for a preliminary arraignment on Friday morning. Given the “violent nature of the crime and the threat to public safety,” the judge took the significant step of denying bail.

Massey is currently facing the following charges:

  • Criminal Attempt – Murder (1st Degree)

  • Aggravated Assault

  • Possession of an Instrument of Crime

  • Terroristic Threats

  • Simple Assault, Harassment, and Disorderly Conduct

He is currently being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Christopher J. Cerski.

A “Sobering Reminder” for Workplace Safety

The management of Planet Fitness released a statement expressing their “heartbreak and shock” over the incident, emphasizing that their priority remains the recovery of their team member.

“We are saddened by the incident that took place at our Cheltenham location,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the team member as they recover. We appreciate local law enforcement’s quick action, and the franchise owner is fully supporting them in their investigation.”

Local safety advocates are viewing this case as a “shattering reminder” that financial disputes and membership bans can carry “lethal consequences” if not handled with robust security protocols. Neighbors in Wyncote have expressed “visceral anger” that a person banned just 24 hours prior was able to return twice to carry out such a “predatory attack.”

How to Help: A Call for Witness Information

While Massey is in custody, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone who was exercising at the gym at the time of the stabbing to come forward with any cell phone footage or witness statements.

In Support of the Victim

As the Planet Fitness employee continues his “long road to recovery,” the Cheltenham community is standing in “collective solidarity.” Though the gym has reopened, the “stain of violence” remains on the Wyncote location. The public is being urged to “appreciate the everyday workers” who often find themselves on the frontlines of “unpredictable public anger.”

The “call for justice” for a man simply trying to enforce gym policy is growing louder as the April 16th court date approaches.
